Camel Milk and Beauty Pageants: Finding an Unexpected Super Food in an Unexpected Place

The mission of Union Kitchen is to build successful food businesses. Their belief is, "When we build successful food businesses, something wonderful happens. We create jobs. We develop wealth in our local economy and we get to celebrate our culture, diversity, and vibrancy. We, collectively, build our city and we build our community."

In this article, Union Kitchen features Augusta DeLisi and her mission to make a healthy protein snack using camel milk. Augusta's passion for this endeavor came about after she experienced the benefits of camel milk while suffering with an autoimmune disease.

Augusta decided to use the highest quality camel milk powder she could find so chose Camelicious camel milk powder as part of her protein snacks, Bedouin Bites.

Here is Augusta's story:

"When we think about the animals whose milk we drink, most of us instantly think of cows and sometimes goats. Talk to Nomadic Nutrition founder August DeLisi, on the other hand, and she’ll tell you about the benefits of camel milk. Yup, that’s right. Camel’s milk. Thanks to the nutritional benefits of camel’s milk, Augusta saw numerous improvements in her overall health. Now, she’s looking to share her health secret with the rest of us through her line of Bedouin Bites, a set of protein bites formulated with camel’s milk.

"Based out of Washington, D.C., Nomadic Nutrition is the life’s work of trainer, health coach, and travel enthusiast, Augusta DeLisi. Nomadic Nutrition aims to “reveal the wondrous health benefits of camel milk through an innovative line of functional camel milk based nutrition products.” To accomplish this, Nomadic Nutrition offers camel-milk bite snacks that come in three unique flavors: Cinnamon Pecan, Mixed Berry, and Chocolate Dipped. With 10-13 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, and just 2-3 grams of sugar, these bites are ideal for the busy modern “nomad” on the go.

"Growing up, Augusta suffered from an autoimmune disease. Needing to maintain her health, Augusta turned to many different sources with mixed results. While these nutritional aids and supplements helped, they didn’t give her the fully healthy life she was looking for. Luckily, the solution she was looking for would appear in an unexpected place. During her time living in Abu Dhabi, Augusta came across a camel beauty pageant (yes, really) and tried camel milk for the first time. Intrigued, Augusta took time to learn more about camel milk’s health benefits and how it has allowed nomadic people to live in that area for thousands of years. Now fully onboard, Augusta began drinking it daily and soon felt better than ever before. With her health transformed, the camel milk convert embarked upon her life’s next big journey. She was going to open her own camel-milk business.

"Things got off to a rocky start. Despite having a clear vision of her goal, Augusta didn’t have much experience in the food industry. This made getting the product shelf ready challenging. Not only did she have a hard time finding the necessary ingredients, Augusta had no way of knowing how to market it effectively. After all, camel milk isn’t something people in the U.S. typically think about purchasing on the regular. Her big break came, as she was accepted into the Union Kitchen Accelerator Program this past summer. Working closely with Union Kitchen, the first-time entrepreneur was able to iron out many of the details that previously proved difficult. This allowed her to build her business, while staying true to her original vision and passion for all things camel! In a recent interview, Augusta credited this tenacity, as the main reason for her success:

“Remember to keep the most important thing the most important thing. (It’s) easy to get caught up and burned out. Remember why you started.”

"Nomadic Nutrition and their camel-milk snack bites are soon set to launch online and at Union Kitchen store locations. In the meantime, you can keep up to date with Nomadic Nutrition by following them on Instagram @nomadic_nutrition and on Facebook @NomadicNutritionLLC. Be sure to check them out. Before long, you may well find yourself pining for a nice, cool glass of camel milk."
